Dogs In Danger

I have 2 chihuahuas myself and while I love them so much, they are very hard to train. They are slightly anti-social and do not like people who they don't know touching them. The one thing I can suggest to you is practice and consistency. It also helps if you have a really special treat that they absolutely love that they are given ONLY when they are behaving in the fashion you want them to on the table.

I'd also suggest checking out the dog training videos on Expert Village's How to Train a Show Dog, specifically the one on How to Table Train Show Dogs.

Hope this helps.

I am unfamiliar with training showdogs.  Your pups may have champion bloodlines, but pups are pups.  I have never met a 6 month old puppy that doesn't have a mindset to play and chew.  If I take a guess, I'd say that even the finest of champions (as pups) see someone coming near them and it's "oh goody, someone to play with!"   It is the nature of a dog to play. Puppies are sooo cute, but when pick them up and cuddle them it rarely happens; all the want to do is play and that typically involves those sharp little baby teeth.   I would assume you have another 6-10 months to go before they stop that.  But I strongly suggest to start training them anyway.  Just do everything the judges will be doing at the show.  When they behave well;give positive reinforcement.  And if they behave badly, use negative reinforcement NOT PHYSICAL! What most professional trainers advise is to put some coins in a empty can and tape the opening shut.  The noise of this when you shake it is unpleasant for the puppy but does not hurt.  With out letting puppy see the can; just give it a single firm shake. The sudden startle of this sound is the negative reinforcement.  And have plenty of small treats and "good boy's" to give for positive reinforcment.

It's a bit like a game some of us may have played as kids,

We would have one kid leave the group, and the rest of us would determine a task for them to do.  When the child returns, they make tiny slow movements and the group says either, "getting warmer"or getting colder"  until the child gets close to the area of the determined task and the group says, you're getting hotter.  This little game of hot and cold can take a child through an entire house to do a tiny task with only a maximum of 4 words used to direct them; it's quite amazing, really.

This is the same concept of positive and negative behavior reinforcement that is used to train your pup.  simply with different reinforcements.

The simplicity of a dog is it's beauty.  Play, Eat, Pottie, sleep.   Anything they do is a version of or a quest for these simple pleasures dogs hold so dear.

Good luck, and remember, all dogs are champions and every day they make you smile they win a blue ribbon.

God bless,

QT

Good luck.
