Are T.V soaps the modern day opium??

What is it about certain soaps that attracts seemingly avid following? Are they good/harmful for social bonding/relationships, have no affects at all, & do they relate to your real life.  Finally, is it sexist to say generally, men don't watch soaps??

No, some men do watch soaps. Over the years I've tuned in now and then to a few, just to catch up. I think it's just that women like the day to day story, whereas men only look once in a while to see who died and who's screwing who. As far as negative effects, well, my grandma watched As the World Turns for probably 40 years evbery day, and she was one of the finest people I ever knew. She just enjoyed it.
