System backup

I simply want to backup my computer files.

Other than the original system, all that i have done or added, since i bought this contraption .

I have plenty of disks, memory sticks, etc. I can do it thru dell, but can i just dump everything myself, on my own disks or memory devices?

I do not want to do this file-by-file, i want to do this once, changing disks or devices as needed. Dump all at once.

You can copy or burn all the documents, favorites, pictures and other files by your own.

a good practice is to build two partitions on your hard drive and use one for the operating system and the other for data - your docs, music, pictures, etc.

If that isn't the case you can't really "dump" everything but the system in one action. you can either save all your "profile" folder (on Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username> ) or you can dump the whole hard drive / partition to an "image" file.

there are software solutions for that e.g. Ghost, Acronis but you'll need an external drive with a couple GB of free space (disk images are compressed but still take quite a lot of storage space).
