The next Supreme Court justice

If David Souter (or someone else) retires from the Supreme Court, who should President Obama nominate?  Should he choose a woman, someone from a minority group, or just the best judge he can find (even if the person is white and male)?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

I am totally against the quota system no matter if it has to do with jobs, education, and especially filling a vacancy on the Supreme Court. He must pick the person who is the most qualified for the position. If you do not agree, I would like to know why.

You make a good point.  But what if a system without quotas (or affirmative action or whatever it's called) leads to a Supreme Court with six or more white men every time?  Maybe it's time for a change?  Wouldn't, say, Sonia Sotomayor bring a different -- and maybe necessary -- perspective to the court than a similarly qualified white male judge?

Like I said, I am all for diversity as long as the person is qualified for the job. Keep in mind that there are some landmark cases that are going in front of the Court very shortly that address this very issue and it should be very interesting to watch the outcome.

It is time that affirmative action was put to bed. It did not work as it was supposed to in the 80's,90's or the 21st century. Fireman in the city of New Haven,Ct. took the city to court and it is now in the Supreme Court. Why because of affirmative action. The city suspended promotions because no one in the minority could score high enough on exams or had the experince and ability of those that did so no one was advanced.

In the long run while affirmative action has helped some, it has hurt alot more. to get a job and advance one has to have ablilty, experience, work ethic and experience. To get a job without any of the above employees, employers, business, schools ect, all are effected and not in a good way.

If the persident appoints a supreme court judge to fill a quota, based on color, gender, liberal ideals and not on ability, experience, education, work ethic and more than a working knowledge the constitution the country, the people, and the government are in trouble. The Congress makes the laws, the Executive Branch is supposed to protect us (and not from ourselves) and the Judical is to enforce the laws. The Supreme Court is not to legislate from the bench it is to interperate the Constitution.

Live free, be safe, and learn.  Knowledge is the key to everything.

Fiona, you asked “what if a system without quotas (or affirmative action or whatever it's called) leads to a Supreme Court with six or more white men every time?” Let me turn it around, What if they were all women, or black, or jewish??? As dripbydrip points out, it should be about qualifications, not ethnic or racial background. We really need to get away from the “PC” attitude. It is actually corrupting our society. In some cases (yes I will agree that there are businesses, people, who still carry unreasonable prejudice) good qualified hard working individuals are passed over to meet a quota. Is that fair? When you work hard for a promotion and the lackadaisical person who does his job, but not much more, gets promoted because of a quota how do you feel? How would you feel being operated on by a surgeon who graduated because of a quota? Do you want your brakes worked on by someone who doesn’t understand hydraulics? Good luck in the wreck you have. I’m going to agree with Lee, we really need to put affirmative action to bed. If an employer is truly bigoted then they need to be prosecuted. It’s time our industry get back on top of the world and the best rise to the top and that is regardless of race, religion, or cultural background.

One can search every facet of the Universe, but unless one carries that which one is searching for with them, they find it not.

I would like to see a young open minded non-liberal who has paid his taxes.  But knowing Obama and his dictatorship ego, coupled with his payback obligations, I would lean towards someone way out of the ordinary and more likely then not they will be from Chicago, connected with the mob and part of the political machine. Unexpected and shocking is Obamas way, he is a glory seeking rock star want to be.
America, “We the People” have lost our country. We are now a two party government, with a socialist political party that dominates Democracy. Our constitution is not being followed and is only a step away from being reinterpreted by a Supreme Court with a liberal socialist mind set who will view it as a socialist constitution. This is being done from crooked politicians out of greed and power, not from idea’s or patriotism.
Our Christian or religious liberties and conservative views are under attack. Not just from are government, but mainly from the media news rooms who exist in and animates a liberal environment. Journalists who show and promote their own views, bias journalist who spin the news in order to manipulate the less enlightened. They want to destroy religious liberties and conservative views. The bias mainstream media and the networks are the biggest problem in America. They are telling American’s how and what to think.
We have a large welfare culture who believes that Democrats are for the little guy and Republicans are for the rich. This incorrect concept made it easier for them to vote for a Democrat, and because Obamas black and tied to Acorn caused the black culture to vote in magnitude. They voted mainly for a black man, not for his politics or moral fiber, they were used. And liberal lawyers, judges and politicians are using the media and Obama to destroy Capitalism and create a welfare society.
The Democratic Party wants to stifle all opposition, independent Fox news, talk radio, Christian programming, and anything that does not agree with their point of view. They keep using words like fairness, American, and liberty and other uplifting words in order to deceive Americans. The Fairness Doctrine should be called The Censorship Doctrine because it is designed to silence conservative talk radio and Christian programming.
“We The People” need to find our voice. We need to learn and perhaps teach in order to get our country back. Write to the networks, write to the media, write to your senators, and write to your congress, when you don’t like the bias news, or a network program or News papers distorted headlines or what the politicians are voting on, then write. Protest in writing or what every means you have. And please don’t vote for the same old politicians or we don’t have a chance, only a Dictator. Let’s have another Tea Party, and another, and another. No more Kool-Aid, drink tea.

IF any one wishing to obtain a job and they put on there resume tht 60% of the time they had been proved wrong while doing ther job do you think they would get hired. Why should we the people accept a candidate for the Supreme Court that is been overturned 60% of the time why should we hire her for life.
