Suggestions for a nice combination of wine for a gift.

I would like to give a case of good wine for Christmas gifts. I'm thinking a mix of some expensive, some reasonable that individuals would not usually buy for themselves. What would you suggest, I'd like to say at about $300.00 per case. Is this being unrealistic?

Life's too short for excessive compromise... maximize everything!

Not unrealistic at all.  If you mix it up, you can do a few bottles of whites like chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc in the price range of $9 to $14.  You might want to then include a white burgundy or 2 in the price range of $20 to $30.  Then choose a few budget reds... and a couple of gems!

Let me know the varietals you are considering and I can make a few specific recommendations.

If your friends like red wine, here are a few suggestions (in different price ranges) that I blogged about.
