Successful privatization of prisons?

This morning the Israeli supreme court has given the state one month to explain why it should not cancel a law that enables it to give frachises to operate private prisons. I know there is a lot of criticism about privatization of prisons, and if I'm not mistaken it has usually failed. I'd like to know if there are any cases of successful privatization of prisons.

not quite an answer to your question, but here's a link to a piece Nehemia Strasler wrote in HaAretz newspaper last  week on this subject:

And here you'll find the last Prison Privatisation Report International Issue, where you might find some more relevant information.

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

I think that in this context successful is very relative. Some people consider the function of prisons to be a place to hold criminals and prevent them from committing more crimes. Other people think that prisons should rehabilitate criminals so they can become good citizens who contribute to society in general. In the US, a number o prisons were privatized and since then the number of inmates has increased. People on both sides of this argument use this fact to support their case, so it is not simple.

Another point to remember is that privatization is done in order to provide the public with a better service at cheaper prices, but in this case there is no agreement on what is considered better service.

Yeah, that's ture, but some parameters are objective: for example the number of cases of violence and suicide in private prisons compared to public ones.

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that in most places where privatization of prisons was tried the governments ended up going back to public prisons. I'd like to know about examples that show otherwise, if they exist.

As far as I know there are still quite a large number of private prisons in the US (correct me if you have some more up to date figures). So if this qualifies as a success I don't know...

I remember reading an article on private prisons in the US, about 3-4 years ago, although I can't remember where I read it. The article was very critical of the private prisons, because in order to be profitable they had to work with fewer guards and give the guards less training, so overall there was more violence and attempts to escape than in government run prisons, and more abuse of the inmates. The article also said that government run prisons had better facilities and programs for rehabilitating prisoners. I didn't treat the article too seriously at the time, as it seemed to me it was a bit biased. Now I'm not so sure

Thanks gkamin. I've read the first one before. The second one really seems to shed some light on the complexity of the issue.
