Stranded outdoors in cold condition

I've been recently told by a very experienced hiker that if you caught up stranded with a friend, and you're both very cold, you should not sleep embraced, but facing back to back, each one cuddling with in himself. He says, this way, less surface is in contact with open air. I specifically remember reading some where else you both should sleep embraced, but can't recall where. So, which one is true?

The CDC (center for disease control and prevention) recommends huddling if you are stranded outdoors. Which I have to say intuitively it makes sense because it seems that actually fewer surfaces is exposed and more is heated by the other person.

Another aspect his heat ratio , if you generate more heat the person you are stranded with you should “share” it because you do have a better chance of survival as a team.
