Stone tools

I have a nice collection of stone tools I have found over the years.  People have said Indians used them but they appear to me to be from cave man days.  I've never heard of the "Indians" sculpting tools out of rock, have you?  How do I find out how old these things are?  No one seems to have much interest about these things and I could eat and breath them.

Yes the Indians did sculpt their tools from rock. Here is the link to a website that I think you will find interesting.

Indians did make their tools from rock as is evidenced by their arrowheads and hatchet heads. Most Indians were nomadic meaning that they were hunters who followed the herds for food with the result that they did not know how to work metals and only got them from the white settlers.

About dating the tools you have. I can recommend 3 options:

1. The cheapest and simplest one,  search Google for Indian stone tools images and try and compare the tools you have with those you find who are dated. I'm no archaeologist but I'm pretty sure that you can find the date within 1000 years.

2. The still cheap but slightly more demanding one. Go to a collage or university in your town. I believe you'll find there an expert in that matter who can date your tools by comparing with already known one.

3. If you have the money for it, you can date the tools by their radioactivity, every stone has some traces of radioactive element in it. stones who are "fresh" have high amount of those element and give high radiation. The older the stone get, the lower the radiation get. It's much like carbon dating organic remains only with larger time scale (and for stone).

Hi,

I would bring these tools into one of the large universities around where you live. I'm sure if they have an archeology department they would be more than happy to take a look at them. There are several methods for dating such tool. chemical diagnostic methods and radioactive isotopes are just a few of them. Sometimes the tools are analyzed by the way they were formed and inspected from that standpoint.

I say let them find out for you.
