Do you know the history of the opening bell on the Stock Exchange?
I've read that it was originally a gong . Thanks in advance.
Originally, the NYSE used a simple gavel to open and close the day's trading. In the late 1800s, the device was switched to a rather large gong. In 1903, as part of the relocation of the stock exchange to its present location at 18 Broad Street, the switch was made from the gong to the cleaner clanging bell.
