Poll: 57% don't see stimulus working






WASHINGTON — Six months after President Obama launched a $787 billion plan to right the nation's economy, a majority of Americans think the avalanche of new federal aid has cost too much and done too little to end the recession.
 
POLL RESULTS: Six questions
 
A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found 57% of adults say the stimulus package is having no impact on the economy or making it worse. Even more —60% — doubt that the stimulus plan will help the economy in the years ahead, and only 18% say it has done anything to help improve their personal situation.
That skepticism underscores the challenge Obama faces in trying to convince the public that the stimulus has helped turn the economy around. It also could complicate the administration's plans to overhaul the nation's health care system.
"This is a wake-up call for the administration." says House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va. "People see the stimulus hasn't worked, and now you want to lay on over $1 trillion in a health care plan."

The administration declined to comment on the poll results.
The stimulus package contains $288 billion for tax cuts and $499 billion in new spending, much of it meant to pay for unemployment and other social services. The $1 billion "cash for clunkers" program was not part of the bill, although its $2 billion expansion comes from stimulus funds.
The government has allocated more than $200 billion in aid. Since the plan began, however, the recession has left an additional 2.2 million Americans without jobs, according to Labor Department surveys.
Economists generally say the recession would have been worse without the stimulus, though they disagree widely on how much it has helped.
"The economy was like a huge pothole we had to fill, and what we did was throw a little gravel in the bottom. You don't fill the hole, not even close. But you make it better," says University of Oregon economist Tim Duy. "Many people don't see the effects so they assume it's not working."
The poll Aug. 6-9 of 1,010 adults has a margin of error of +/–4% for the full sample. In a question asked of a subsample, 51% of Americans say the government should have spent less on the stimulus; 31% say the amount was "about right." Also, almost half in the full sample say they are "very worried" that stimulus money is being wasted.

Always live in the real world, not just in your mind

What stimulus all I have seen is waste and give aways. I realize I'm buying my neighbors car for him, and the Koreans and Japonese are richer for it. Government Motors isn't doing that great. Debt Debt is all I see. Then health care rip off which will be passed (shoved down our throats) and ultimately bankrupt/destroy our dollar. Way to go Dems. The bailouts started it all, thanks Repubs.

Some  Republican  Governors of  many  states refused  the  Stimulus package  for   their state cause  they  know   that  it  make  things  worse for their  state , My state has  high unemployment now

A penny saved  is a penny earned

Not for me......................I haven't seen any extra money. Or car

In fact i am having to pay back social security $ 50.00 a month

Out of my check they deduct every month because the  100 days

(  I WAS THERE )  BUT IF YOU ARE THERE 1 WEEK IN THAT MONTH IT IS COUNTED A WHOLE MONTH. I went in last of march,  came out middle of april,  had to go back in june and got out july 7. So they are claiming mar-april-may-june-july  that they over paid.   Bunch of heck !!!!!!!!!!

Months i was in the nursing home they deposited my check.

I have direct deposit.   Just cause i was there doesn,t mean i didn't have bills at home to pay.....Electric, water, phone, taxes on property and home, house insurance,   ect......Which i paid.

I dont get that much anyway,  and they wanted to keep all my check to pay them back and they were doing it for 2 months till i told them how do they expect me to live ?  I have paid back $ 500.00 so far.........50.00 each month.

I drive a really old car like me..Lol.    Pitiful how us seniors

Are treated.  At least with bush  i would get an increase on my check,,,,,i started out with $ 269.00   a month,,,,,,,,igot little increses over the years and felt like a fat cat and then when i had a " very few dollars more to look at....They started taking the $ 50.00  so i am back to square one.  Lol,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but everything has gone up........

Cool Equal justice for All

The law works but the system needs changed, We all abide by the law but sometime it failes us. The same with the goverment. God bless the USA, Brign our troops HOME safely, To the men who did not get the credit they deserve, MAY GOD WATCH OVER OUR SERVICE MEN.

Lets face the facts we have a high unemployment rate in FLORIDA over 10% then factor in those who dont get unemployment on top of that who give up looking for work lets count them also. Now to the fact that the poll states Poll: 57% don't see stimulus working and it has not and never will along with HEALTH CARE REFOURM as it has a cost to it so more money out of our pockets do we get to put some in ?????????? Lets look at the bank failure rate which way is it gowing up i think so we will have only 3 banking choices to choose from That will be GOVERMENT RUN as for THE AUTOMAKERS lets not forget goverment run HEALTH CARE. And no as most of you i have only seen higher bills everywhere. And as was said by NANADEE we have been on a pay back for 4 years now and it will run to the end of our lives and then some does our goverment work for us no we work for the GOVERMENT as with the SS payback and no raise for at least 2 years how mucher deeper in dept can we get. We have 2 cars that are old but one gets to good MPG a 91 and an 86 truck that is to old for this rebate program as i was told by my dealership. IS this fair to any of us ask KING HUSSANE OBAMA and QUEEN NANCY PELOSKI lets not forget PRINCE BIDEN in the mix. WE AMERICANS NEED TO REVOLT AGAINST THE HEALTC CARE PLAN SAY NO ANK KEEP SAYING NO TO IT.

Ducks Bump Wildcats in Game of the Year...

It was certainly further evidence that the Pac-10 is back as a national conference. After two overtimes and a touchdown with six seconds left in regulation, the Oregon Ducks outlasted Arizona 44-41 to take control of the Pac-10. For a while, the stars seemed to align for Arizona. California upset Stanford during the the third quarter of the Wildcats' game, bumping one Pac-10 peer from Rose Bowl contention. Meanwhile, Arizona shrugged off a 14-0 deficit to take a 24-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Longhorns Find It Easy to Stay Focused
