Stereotypes

We all KNOW that stereotypes aren't true: or are they ? Isn't there some deep basis of truths to even the most offensive stereotypes ? When we hear stereotyping, don't we silently agree to ourselves that "well, there is SOME truth to that" ? Or do we ? Don't we all know that when we hear "Jews will cheat you", "Irish are drunks", "Indians are worthless", "Blacks are lazy", "Rednecks are stupid", "Republicans are bigots", and "Mexicans are thieves" that enough of them ARE to justify tainting the whole group? Or is this simply bigotry based on hate? And finally, are you quilty ? Either of BEING a stereotype ? or of stereotyping ?

Thanks for the invite.

I had actually looked at this question, just hadn't answered it yet.

I think perhaps we are all guilty of stereotyping in some respect and to some degree, but none of these seem to fit me.

I'm not quite sure why, but maybe it's because I don't believe any of these. I've been trying to think of one that I DO believe, but so far all I've come up with is something on the order of "Potheads are stupid" which, as we all know, is not exactly a stereotype.

Another is "Lawyers are moneygrubbers" which is probably open to interpretation as to whether or not it's a stereotype, but I suspect the numbers would fall strongly on the latter side.

"Politicians are liars?" Oh hell, I'm not doing too well with these.

Oh wait, I know - "People who play rap music are punks." Definite stereotype, and yes; I'll admit I'm definitely guilty!

Conservation: Paying more and getting less.

How about “People who play rap music so loud that others are forced to hear it are inconsiderate aholes”?

LOL B.o.B.  before we could answer your question we will have to go off on a tangent and decide the difference in " inconsiderate assholes" and "considerate assholes".

"The Sky Is The Limit"

I don't believe in stereotyping, only because I get stereotyped ALL THE TIME!  I am a young attractive woman and I die half of my hair blonde. (naturally brunette)  I work with computers and with more men then women.  When people see me they think I am dumb, ditzy, etc.  I may be street-dumb, but I am very book smart!  I could put a computer together blind folded.  I never even went to school for computers when I started working with them at a helpdesk.  I worked 8yrs with computers before I went to school to get my Bachelor's in computers.  Anyways, I always get treated like I am dumb, only from first impressions because of my appearance.

And now that I think about it, I am guilty of stereotyping too!
