Stepson total car

I have a stepson 19 who is living with us for college. We are paying for his car.

Over the last week he was visting his mother in PA. He wanted to drive to canda, he was told no. Well he did and totaled it. He is still at his mothers.

Last night we received a call telling us, that we have to buy him another car. What to do?

Since you told him "no" and since he totaled his car, I think it's your step-son's responsibility to deal with the consequences of not having a car. It's nice enough that a car was bought for him, without him working for it... but since he totaled it, he can pay for the next car. I think that you bear no responsibility to buy him a new car, especially when you said that he was not allowed to drive to Canada.
