Yes, I've taken them for years and yes, they do lower cholesterol levels, especially the LDL.

Yes, I take the only one that is over the counter.  "Red yeast rice" is Lovastatin.  Merck has tried to have it removed from the open market since 1999 without success.  Red yeast rice extract was their secret until that time.  Few people realize this.  You can purchase "Lovastatin" for hundreds of dollars per month or you can buy red yeast rice extract for about ten dollars per month.  Does red yeast rice work?  Yes, it has lowered my LDL from 279 to 162.
