I always love aquariums but never had any fish of my own, I have some spare cash and a nice niche to put an aquarium in, and how should I start this new hobby.

The answer depends on what kinds of fish you want, and whether you want a freshwater aquarium (which is typically considered easier to set up and maintain) or a saltwater aquarium.  You can find advice on eHow for selecting freshwater or saltwater fish, and setting up a freshwater or saltwater aquarium.

By the way, here's my personal favorite freshwater species -- the Siamese fighting fish.  Just don't put two male Siamese fighting fish in the same tank, because they really do fight ....

yeah, decide on what kind of fish you want and decide on the size of the aquarium you'll place your fish.

after going through six weeks of setting up an aquarium i would suggest taking it very slowly. start with only a couple fish and give your aquarium a chance to cycle. do not add chemicals except to take the chlorine out of your tap water. if your aquarium becomes cloudy do not add chemicals to clarify the water. trust me this will cause problems. patience patience patience. find someone at the local pet store i have found very knowledgeble people at both petsmart and petco. find someone you trust and listen to them i am learning the hard way. do not rush this
