using a free service or fee service like Ning is around $40 bucks per month..great for non profits.

but if you want to eventually make money with your network, get investors and own your great idea..you need to build it custom. NO platform!!!! they own everything..how will you sell it if you dont own it. so, for startups and companies wanting to eventually sell and/or make money with their social networks..they need to have it built custom...NO platforms..you own the code.

Expect to pay around $30k and can go over a million easily.
