If you live in the state of New Jersey as I do, after ten years of marriage you are entitled to alimoney. How much money he makes at his job and how much you make at yours will be decided by the judge as to how you will be entitled to receive. Attorney's are quite expensive, starting generally with a retainer of approximately $2,500.00. If this is the avenue of which you choose to take, you can always go to your family courthouse to obtain the paperwork of which to file said motion which would cost approximately $1,700.00. A third option is to go to staples, office depot and obtain your own divorce kit which will cost you any where from approximately $25.00 to $35.00. In this case, you would have to fill this information out yourself and both mail and certify mail the paperwork to your spouse. Iam speaking from past experience, as this will not risk your finances with respect for spousal support. I too, was in an abusive ralationship with three children and was a stay at home Mom for 15 years. We went from friends and families houses for nearly 9 months and even contacted the local newspaper in my town and had an article published stating that" I would rather live out of my car knowing that my children were with me, before I would let any one take them away from me." I worked as a pre-K teacher and a pharmacist technician finally had my own apartment after, like I stated before, nearly 9 months and that was almost 8 years ago now. I know that the decesion that I made was the choice not only for my children's protection but my own as well. I have a final restraining order on my huband. Abusive relationships, weather they be verbal, psychhological, mental, emotional or even controlling tendencies are all considered a form of domestic violence in sense or another. Please use what ever ways and means that you have to in order to protect yourself. Look to family and friends for their support as this will help you through this rough and difficult situation. Please contact me as soon as possible to keep me updated as Iam a concerned Domestic Violence Victim survivor and so are my children. Good Luck and Best Wishes!
