Cal's Jahvid Best Diagnosed With Concussion...

by Brian Grummell Filed under: California , Oregon State , Injuries Cal's electric tailback Jahvid Best , once a Heisman Trophy candidate was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a serious spill against Oregon State Saturday night. Midway through the second quarter, Best rose high into the air to hurdle Oregon State safety Cameron Collins on the way to a touchdown, but fell onto his back and neck and was left immobile from the play. Best's helmet flew off from the impact with the ground and his arms immediately went stiff. The running back was carted off the field on a stretcher and transported to a local emergency room for observation. According to Cal spokesman Herb Benenson, Best had feeling in all his extremities but suffered a concussion. Best suffered what the team called a "mild concussion" last week against Arizona. But coach Jeff Tedford said all other tests were negative. "He's in good shape," Tedford told the media. Zenyatta Wins Breeders' Cup, Now 14-0

Haye Dethrones WBA Champ Valuev

In the end, the smaller man backed up his words. Overcoming disadvantages of 98 pounds in weight, and nine inches in height, as well as an undisclosed injury to his sledgehammer right hand, the London-born Haye abandoned his power-punching approach for a slick boxing style on the way to dethroning the 7-foot "Russian Giant" by a 12-round majority decision before a packed arena in Nuremberg, Germany. Haye wobbled the ex-champion with a looping left hook and appeared to have him in danger of going down in the final round, but Valuev held on, only to lose 116-112 on the cards of Stefano Carozza and Tom Miller. Ryan Moats Earns Texans' Starting Job

Happy Trails No More for Hawkeyes

As a result, No. 8 Iowa fell to unranked Northwestern on Saturday, 17-10. The junior quarterback left just before halftime after Northwestern's Corey Wootton tackled him in the end zone. Stanzi sprained his right ankle and fumbled the ball. As Northwestern's Marshall Thomas recovered the fumble for a touchdown, Stanzi remained on the Kinnick Stadium turf. He would walk off the field on his own power, but Stanzi would not return to the game. Nets' Douglas-Roberts Has H1N1 Virus

The Nets announced Saturday afternoon that starting two-guard Chris Douglas-Roberts has come down with the dangerous virus, putting the player out of action and the rest of the team at risk. Though the Nets have stunk, Douglas-Roberts has had a solid start to the season, a follow-up on a disappointing rookie campaign in which the University of Memphis product got little opportunity for New Jersey. CD-R missed Friday's game at Philadelphia with flu-like symptoms ... a rather prophetic diagnosis. The Nets are limited to eight or nine players due to injury (Courtney Lee tweaked his groin Friday), so the team can't exactly afford to lose any others to illness. There have been no reports of the virus spreading in Nets locker room, and Nets PR says every precaution has been taken. Manny Ramirez Exercises His Option to Stay...

His agent Scott Boras let Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti know about Ramirez's decision on Friday night. All of which means that Ramirez will make $20 million with the Dodgers rather than becoming a free agent, which is a smart move considering it's highly unlikely Manny would get that much money anywhere else next year. Vince Lombardi Headed to Broadway

The play, adapted by a Packers fan, will be based on David Maraniss's respected Lombardi bio When Pride Still Mattered , a tome considered more nuanced than you'd expect given the mythical aura surrounding the legendary coach. Sadly, Lombardi will not be a musical, leaving open the gaping void of football-based showtunes in our cruel world. No beads on who will play the icon, and I'm afraid we won't be able to convince David Cross to put on 75 pounds to take the role. Sandomir reports the play could hit Broadway in late 2010. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco went 20 of 25 through the air in that game, and as Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post points out , 12 of 15 against Denver's nickel defense.
