I'm a beginner guitar player and would realy like to get into composing and song writing.
Is there any rule of thumb regarding song writing? should I compose the music first or write the words?
Hi, No rules when it comes to creativity ;-) Many famous song writers wrote the lyrics first and others wrote the music first. It can go both ways. Many times you will find yourself with a few melodies that have no words or a few texts with no melodies. The magic happens when you finally manage to match a pair. Good luck

The words to "Yesterday" started off "Scrambled eggs" My suggestion would be to pay attention to the key signature. Don't write in too many funky keys. Pay attention to the time signature. I recently had the misfortune of being handed a song book that was mostly in odd, odd times. The winner of the most odd award was the 8/9 signature. Who sings that? I couldn't even count it. Remember: Someone else needs to duplicate what you write, whether it be words or instrumentation.
