Software for creating comics?

Are there any software packages specific for creating comics or do artists simply use generic image processing programs such as freehand and Inkscape? If there are speific ones, I'd love to hear recommendations.

There are software packages for comics, for example

Magna Studio. I'm not quite sure, but I think that basically these are standard image manipulation programs with added tools that make adding text balloons and things like that easier and faster. The full version costs $300, so I think only pros will be interested.
