Social Security and Government pensions

I am 63 years old and a retired government employee drawing a pension under the old Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS).  I also worked non government jobs and have 35 credits under the social security system per my 2008 annual statement.  I still work part time and expect to have my 40 credits in 2010.  While I was still employed by the government, I was told in a retirement class that I would not be allowed to draw a government pension and social security.  I believe it was either called a government pension offset or windfall elimination provision.  Is this true?

Not really.  You can collect both if you have the 40 required quarters.   However, there will be a offset based on your CSR.  You will still get something.  When I retired under CSR, I asked SS about this since I had only 17 quarters.  Had I had the required 40 quarters, I would have gotten less than $100 per month, so I chose not to work to get the remaining quarters.  In addition, my husband worked under SS, but because of the pension offset, I was not able to collect under his. CSA pays great benefits, but we get screwed by the SSA.
