Snake bite

How should one react if bitten by a snake? I had a close call recently, which triggered this question.

First you should lie down and make minimum movements as possible, and then call for help. after calling for help try to set the bitten limb. that's about it, there nothing more you can do by your self. A trained medic would set an IV infusion, but that's something you can't do for your self.

Do not-  suck the wound , try to put a vein block, put ice on the wound, try to cut it. those kind of actions would only make your situation much more worth.

Photokim gave you a great answer , I just want to add one thing I think he forgot to put an  emphasis on is to remain calm! Stay relaxed as possible. You don't want to get your blood pressure raising.

Be a blessing to others

Hi,

having been bit by a copperhead ( on my birthday of all days ) in 2004, I can tell you its a scary experience, but having been an EMT volunteer years ago, I knew to try and remain as calm as possible. I actually did more damage to my lower leg kicking the snake off me than the snake did biting me. Once I pinned his head down with one foot, I kicked the varmit about ten feet and killed him with my walking stick ( I sometimes use a cane or stick if the pain is bad ). I took the snake back to the house and told my wife I'd been bit and she got all hyped up and wanted me to go to the hospital right then, but the only pain I was in was from where I scraped some skin off my leg and bruised the area kicking the snake off. I should have let her drive me to the hospital in case things went bad, but I drove myself and they took me right in after I told them I was positive the snake was a copperhead. ( We were told to try and always bring the dead snake with you for confirmation of the snakes identification, but I knew for certain what he was and they thanked me for not bringing him in ). They gave me an Iv of normal saline to keep the veins open in case they had to administer some anti-venom or other medications in a hurry, some mild pain medication and a tetnus shot and just kept me for observation for about 3 hours while I missed the fireworks ( July 3rd ). The doctor and I agreed the bite I received was what they call a "dry bite" where as the snake only wanted me to get off his back and didn't want to waste his limited venom on somethng he couldn't eat.  The advice Photokim gave above was right on the money.
