Slurping when eating Japanese noodles

Is it considered polite to slurp when eating noodles in Japan? Do the same rules apply to all types of noodles?

It's more like it's not considered impolite to slurp. I think there are different degrees of acceptable slupring noises depending on the setting, company, etc. If your surrounded by a bunch of salarymen at a ramen shop during lunch, you can slurp as loud as you like.

Many Japanese noodle newbies slurp too tightly and create high-pitched sounds that drive dogs insane. The key is loosen your lips and get a nice wet, juicy sound. More than tradition, I think it makes the noodles taste better (and in the case of hot noodles, you're less likely to burn your mouth).

And while I'm on the subject, if you have a seperate dipping bowl of sauce/broth, pick the bowl up off the table with your free hand, dip the noodles in about halfway and hold it slightly under your chin while slurping. Don't be foolish and dunk all of your noodles in the sauce and let them soak.

And watch ''Tampopo,'' for a definitive lesson on the art of eating ramen.

As far as I know, you're supposed to slurp all kinds of noodles, and also soup. But not when you're drinking tea.

It is polite, and the Japanese do it all the time, mostly with Ramen and Soba. It's also OK to slurp Udon noodles, but it's more difficult :)

Hi, yes you should practice your slurping sound because there is the good and cool way and the dirty, nasty way. The cool ways is a short, decisive, I-know-what-I-am-doing kind of noise. The bad is slushy, long and dripping.

Here, i found this info.

Q.  How come Japanese people slurp Japanese and Chinese noodles but not spaghetti?

A.  Jens Jenson was kind enough to write and inform us that:
   1) Noodles (SOBA and RAMEN) should be eaten while VERY hot in order to get the full flavour. When slurping, Japanese
people take in a lot of air to cool the noodles just before swallowing them. This makes the famous"slurping sound".
   2) Soba noodles in cold broth and nothing else, is considered to be such a simple taste, that in order to get the full experience,
one should use all ones senses while eating them. Hence the slurping sound will "activate" your hearing and make the
flavour come out. (Tasting, smelling, watching, feeling should be obvious..)
