Slave hard drive from computer that will not boot

My 3 month old Gateway laptop will not boot!! I receive an error message "a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart."  I have the operating disk but I am concerned about losing important files (i.e. documents and pictures).  I have another laptop and a desktop. How can I slave my hard drive from the Gateway to one of the other computers that I own?

Hi Michelle, don't rush into slaving your hard drive, have you tried booting from safe mode or do you get the error before you can even choose to do so? A rescue disc may solve such a problem so you will be able to access your computer and backup your HD.

Unfortunately, I receive the error msg before I'm able to choose safe mode.  I have the recovery disk that came with the laptop, but I understand that recovering will delete all of my files.  Gateway said that the hard drive can be "slaved", but, of coarse, wouldn't help me with this process.

Using a recovery disk doesn't mean you necessarily need to delete your hard drive. If you could boot your computer, saving the data may become much easier. In order to slave your HD, you should disassemble it from your laptop and attach it using a SATA or IDE cable to another computer.

You can remove the drive from your laptop and hook it up to another computer as a slave. The slave position has to be defined in the bios and also by the sequence of the jumpers on your motherboard.
