Slacker at work

A person at my work was hired only because her father is friends with one of the Vice Presidents here.  She had no prior experience doing the job she was hired to do.  She's been here about a month and most of the day she sits at her empty desk and reads magazines.  When I ask her to help with something she always says no at first.  As soon as her boss leaves for the day she leaves too, even if it's not quitting time.  Is this fair?   I'm feeling kind of resentful. Any advise?

Life is like a Vapor, here then gone

You can swim all day in the sea of knowledge, and never get wet.

Unfortunatley..... its not what you know, its who you know. I know its frustrating, but this happens all the time. If your boss is her boss and they are friends, not much you can do, you could complain but it might cost you your job. There are lazy people in every job, some get away with it and some dont. If she isnt doing anything all day, she wont be there long. Just watch for awhile, than if it doesnt change, go talk with someone about it. Good Luck

When the boss starts to make obviously bad decisions like this, it is a sign that you should be looking for a new job before the company folds.  Get out now while you are still on good terms.  Keep your job while you look for the new one, as it will make it easier to get the new one if you are employed.

Be honest in your interviews about why you want to leave your current company, but don't make a big thing about being resentful.  It is understandable that the situation makes you feel bad, but you have to focus on the positive things that you can do, not the negative things that are done around you.

I'm sorry that you have this problem, but work is a transient thing and not worth getting emotional about.  Save your emotions for something important, like family and friends.

You've already had some problems with another employee there, and now you have this new one.  The supervision there seems to be lacking in ability to hire and control their employees, and maybe they will get better, but their behavior seems like a crap shoot when it comes to making the right decisions.

Bob, your advice doesn’t make sense to me.  Why would I leave my job of 3 years that I like because of some slacker they hired a month ago?  That’s ridiculous!  If Yedda asks you to answer one of my questions again, don’t bother.
