Sites that don't work well with Firefox

There are many sites in Israel that don't work well with Firefox, like Haaretz and ynet (to a lesser extent). Do you think that this is intentional, since many of the Firefox users have ad-blocking extensions and the site owners think this may lead to a decrease in their revenues?

I believe that the main reason for the absence of proper Firefox support in Israeli sites is the idea that Firefox users are just a small and relatively insignificant portion of the web-surfers population. Therefore, the effort of properly adjusting sites to Firefox isn't cost-effective, and it's better to stick only with the Internet Explorer standards.

This view, by the way, is the official position of the Israeli administration's organ who's in charge of the different web sites of the government's bodies. as this article states (sorry, but the link is in Hebrew).

Another reason, which is add-ons related, can be found in the fact that Firefox can install add-ons, such as IE tab, that emulates IE on their Firefox. Add-ons that fix Firefox compatibility problems in specific Israeli sites (like Haaretz, Ynet, Bank Hapoalim, etc.) can also be found, and therfore the sites administrators consider themselves exempt from the obligation to adjust their sites to Firefox, since the Firefox users community will, presumably, look after itself.

Israel is a little behind as far as using the standard web design, A lot of design school still teaches their students to work by Explorer standards rather then by the over all standards. I think that the main reason for that is that in Israel, unlike other places, there are almost no mac users, who doesn't really use internet explorer, and so in the rest of the world, there are a wider variety of browsers and so using standards is more important.

After several letters demanding that the govrenments offices website would work on firefox, there is an attempts to follow standards and I hope that the rest of the companies in Israel will follow.

This is a really good article about it:

Imagine 2018 Israel

OneVoice Israel worked with 250 local schools across Israel, 20 municipality education centers in major cities, a number of youth magazines and internet forums, the Tel Aviv Cinamathique, as well as Tzofim, Noar Oved, Shomar Tzair, and Mhanot Haolim youth movements to bring the imagine: 2018 essay contest to youth from all over Israel. The contest launched on 16 March and ran through mid-June, and was open to all school children aged 13-18 throughout Israel. OneVoice Israel accepted submissions on its own website, through the largest internet forum in Israel (Tapuz), through the heads of cinema chapters at 250 different schools, and through the youth movements with which it is partnering. In addition, OneVoice staff and volunteers went from school to school to talk about the contest and encourage youth to participate. School teachers and administrators chose one semi-finalist per school; the leaders of each youth movement will select ten essays from their pool; and the OneVoice Israel staff and board have selected a total of forty semi-finalists from among the internet submissions. Another round of judging narrowed the pool to a total of 50 winners by 30 June 2008. Essays were judged based on clarity and creativity, in addition to the potential of the essay to motivate others to take action toward ending the conflict. An event honoring the winners will be held in the late summer. OneVoice Israel is exploring the potential of partnering with an organization called Cinemathique for this event to raise the profile. All 50 winning essays will be published in a booklet, to be presented to the Israeli governmental leadership. Additionally, the winners' essays will be entered into the pool of applicants for the imagine: 2018 Director's Cut.

Why There Is No Palestine

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is the defining crisis of our era. Like the Pyramid Wars of old, it is a struggle between rival cosmological hypotheses. Ultimately, one must choose between the Jews and the Muslims, or be a trivial observer to this eras epic drama. If one believes in the Elohim described in the Old Testament, one must conclude that the Jews are the rightful inhabitants of the Biblically-defined land of Israel. In all things exist opposing polarities, opposing orientations. This is the nature of life. In the heavens, as in the psyche of man, are these opposing forces at play. Yahweh, the god of the old testament, represents a synthesis of these opposing forces, and therefore represents a level of cosmic neutrality. More explicitly, Yahweh is derived from combining Enki and Enlil, the two prime contenders for dominion of the earth in the Sumerian stories. One who is intuitive enough to sense divine existence, and reasonable enough to apply logic, will ultimately seek Sumers explanatory wisdom. Those whose psyches reflect the neutrality of Yahweh must inhabit the zone declared neutral in the ancient struggle between opposing cosmic forces. The Jews who seek to build the Third Temple and conduct animal sacrifice therein are those truly worthy to dwell in the presence of the Elohim. Note how Orthodox Jews can be found in support of various sides of tremendously polarizing issues, thereby demonstrating a neutrality worthy of Yahweh. To properly set the stage for the coming of those in whose image we were created, The Jews must have unimpeded inhabitation of Israel and the Temple must be built. This is why the existence of a Palestinian homeland within the borders of Biblically-defined Israel is a blasphemy against the intentions of the heavens. This does not speak either for or against the notion of Jewish global domination. All viable groups struggle for domination. Nonetheless, the primacy of Jerusalem as the international seat of Elohimic authority must be respected. Within Elohimic authority, as within the psyche informed by the presence of such authority, there exists both Heaven and Hell. Both will need be unleashed to secure the most worthy of objectives.

Ahmadinejad 'The idea of a smaller Israel...

This is a combination of two addresses that the mutant ninja turtle gave on Iranian television in late September. I wonder if he would agree with the proposition that if the 'Palestinians' can go after 'settlers' as 'human shields,' the IDF can go after Gaza civilians as human shields. Hmmm. Following are excerpts from statements made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which aired on IRINN, the Iranian News Channel, on September 18 and 23, 2008. Let's go to the videotape. A transcript follows: September 18, 2008 Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: The Zionists are crooks. A small handful of Zionists, with a very intricate organization, have taken over the power centers of the world. According to our estimates, the main cadre of the Zionists consists of 2,000 individuals at most, and they have another 8,000 activists. In addition, they have several informants, who spy and provide them with intelligence information. But because of their control of power centers in the U.S. and Europe, and their control of the financial centers and the news and propaganda agencies, they spread propaganda as if they were the entire world, as if all the peoples supported them, and as if they were the majority ruling the world. That is a great lie just like their Jewishness is a great lie. They have no religion whatsoever. They are a handful of lying, power-greedy people who have no religion, who only want to take over all the peoples and countries, and to trample the rights of the peoples. [...] I've heard that one of them [PM Olmert] recently said that the idea of Greater Israel is dead. I would like to declare that the idea of "smaller Israel" is also dead. The very notion of Israel is dead, but they are lagging behind the times. Just like the idea of Greater Israel died 30 years ago, and they did not realize this, and have continued to perpetrate crimes for 30 years... Today, I say to them: The idea of smaller Israel is dead. Let me give them a piece of advice: You would be better off if you stop your oppression and express remorse. If you want to do something good in your lives, leave the land of Palestine, free it from your oppression and occupation. Carry on with your lives. You captivated [Jewish] people with your trickery and lies, and you brought them over there with false promises. You sent them to settlements in order to serve as your human shields, and you continue to perpetrate your crimes. Let me give you some advice: Enough. For 60 years, you have been doing ugly things and committing crimes leave, and show remorse. [...] You've heard on the news that [the Zionists] established a network for kidnapping people. They kidnap oppressed, destitute, ignorant people from other countries, and bring them to the occupied lands to serve as human shields. [...] If the occupiers and invaders take ignorant people even if they are innocent and use them as human shields in order to carry out invasions, the [Palestinian] people, which is on the defensive, has to conduct resistance, even if it is against innocent people, who were brought to the scene without being aware of it. [...] At this very moment, hundreds of American exporters are trying very hard to sell products to Iran, but we refuse. The same goes for investors from some European countries that you mentioned, who insist on investing in Iran but we set conditions. [...] September 23, 2008 You [the West] cut off some of our TV and radio satellite channels, which brought the message of the Iranian people to some other nations. You thought that the Iranian people would be helpless, but I want to tell you that today, the Iranian people has the technology to build all kinds of satellites, and with the help of God, it will launch its first communications and remote-sensing satellite into space. [...] A Zionist organization with 2,000 [members] and with 7,000 or 8,000 activists have brought the world to a state of confusion. Let me tell them that if they themselves do not wrap up Zionism, the strong arm of the peoples will wipe these germs of corruption off the face of the earth. Kind of makes the idea of an international forum in which Israel and Iran can talk to each other ludicrous, doesn't it? I wonder how Ahmadinejad deals with the demons he obviously sees all over the place.
