How can I get a Sitebuilder counter to show the correct number of visits to my site?

How can I get my Sitebuilder to insert a counter on my site that will show my chosen starting number?  I try to select "start with this #" and insert what I think it should be approximately by now, but it is like it somehow got reset to some very low # and will not take my picked number.  For example, I know it was at over 22,000 hits last year but for some reason it just started only showing the numbers it has, not what I choose.  If I put in a number of my choosing, it still only shows what it THINKS the actual visits are.  Does anyone know how to fix this??
