To get what you've never had, you have to do things you've never done.

Asked about “Love & Sex on AOL Coaches

Silent Treatment? Or Passive Agressiveness?

Is there any way to get him to stop "shutting down" everytime we get into an argument? His silence drives me CRAZY!

You are not the only woman to complain about this masculine reaction to a woman's tirade. Dr John Gray's best seller, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus," goes into great detail about how men and women will react differently but in the same pattern when confronted with a disagreement. After an argument with a woman, a man will crawl into his cave, lick his wounds and wait until it all blows over. I think you and your husband should read this book; you will both enjoy it and learn a great deal about each other and yourselves.

I'll search, while you Cool wait.

Years ago, I experienced this problem and sought the advice of a professional counselor.  I learned how to use green-light words and red-light words, you know -- words that either uplift or hurt your partner.  However, you too may want to seek the advice of a relationship/marriage counselor.  If not, you can visit the website I've provided to learn how to argue successfully:

www.memorialhospital.org/Library/general/stress-SUCCESSF.html  I'm sure that after reading the information provided at the website, you and your partner can sit down to discuss and establish ground rules for arguing.  You can begin by saying something similar to the following, "honey, I love you and care about how you feel when we are arguing.  But I need to know what it is that you want me to change about me?"  Although, I'm not saying that you need to change anything about you, but this is just an ice-breaker to use in an effort to begin a dialog with him.  Also review the do's and don'ts area the of the successfully arguing website (provided by a hosptal)  I hope this helps to at least get him to talk to you and not be silent.
