Sigma 18-200 for Canon 350D?

I am cosidering getting a Sigma 18-200 lens for my Canon 350D. Other options are of course the Tamron and the Canon 18-200. The Sigma one looks like the best compromise price / value. Any opinions?

Generally, lenses with this wide range are not recommended to anything beyond amateur and novice photography but the temptation to use one lens for a wide selection of situations is high. If you are concerned with the quality of you photos you are better off with a set of two or more lenses to cover this range (for example, 18-50 and 70-200). See the excellent faq at photonotes.org. If you don’t mind compromising quality in favor of flexibility, get the 18-200.

Canon doesn’t have 18-200 lens, the closest is Canon 28-200 but if you willing to compromise the wide end, also take a look at the Tokina 24-200 which gets good reviews.

As for 18-200 Sigma vs Tamron, I don’t think there is a clear winner. The opinions vary in both directions. Just read the reviews and decide for yourself:

Tamron AF 18-200mm and Sigma AF 18-200mm

Hope this helps.

Thank you, based on these reviews it looks as if the Tamron AF 18-200mm would cut it in this case.

Hi Yaniv

you can use the new nikon 18-200 AI-S VR with a special chupchick which converts nikon lenses to cannon mount. This lens is suposed to be much better than the off brand lenses in the same range. I have no idea whether the AF and VR would work on a canon body.

Edit: ha ha. I didnt realise how old the question was when I answered it. I guess you bought the lens ages ago.

Yeah, I got the Tamron lense a few months ago. I am quite happy with it, except that the image quality at the 200 end leaves a lot to be desired. However, I can not say if it's better or worse then the Canon one since I didn't use / compare both.

At the end of the day you have to choose what is more important. Taking a photo or displaying a photo. If you are into taking photos then the lens weight/affordability/ease of use matters much more than sharpness/distortion/abberations etc.

If display is your thing than drop digital and buy a 6x6 camera with a Ziess 180mm 2.8 Sonnar. :)
