Awesome question!

1. Coupon sites. "Cheap Stingy Bargains" is my favorite, as you can usually save a few hundred bucks if you browse trough the various PC deals.
cheapstingybargains.com
retailmenot.com
buy.com
overstock.com
dealofday.com
craigslist.com
currentcodes.com
ebay.com
hotcouponworld.com
bobsfreestuffforum.co.uk
dealsofamerica.com
bensbargains.net
bargainist.com
typepad.com
ecost.com
guide2free.com
techbargains.com
2. Computer manufacturer websites. Dell, HP, Toshiba, Fujistu, Sony... Personally I HIGHLY recommend a dell notebook, even refurbished! At least 1GB ram. You might even like a UBUNTU linux notebook instead of windows. I run and love Ubuntu!!!
3. Tech review sites!
toptenreviews.com (?)
epinions.com maybe?
tomshardware.com awesome!
ripoffreport.com (?)
consumer reports (reviews if you buy a subscription. NOT recomended due to price.)
CNET (huge tech review site)
Amazon
PriceWatch
Google Froogle
NewEgg (huge online tech store)
TigerDirect (huge online tech store)
4. National "chain stores" like walmart and bestbuy. Office depo, costco, etc. Bestbuy and costco are the best "in person stores to return things". get the warrently.
5. In review, go to cheapstingybargains and pick out a $800.00 notebook. Assuming you WONT be doing gaming on a notebook. Desktop PC's are cheaper, more durable, and faster. GET A DESKTOP IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN. Meaning, if you don't mind it not being mobile. Desktops are way better, but they are NOT portable.
My only question is what will you be using the notebook for? And for direct comparison of notebooks, I don't know of many sites... Maybe just CNET. Try a google search in the format of "_____ vs _____" with the underscores being the name of the notebooks you want to compare.
You might also google for notebook comparison.
sometimes craigslist or ebay will get you that ultimate deal, but could take months in searching. i would say an older "Super Fast Notebook" is just as good as a newer "mid level" notebook!
You might considder....
* Biggest possible battery you can get.
* Batters must be purchased like every four years. $80.00 a pop.
* No taking laptop into bathtub!!! could kill ya!
* Always get a warrently
* Dont over spend. dont buy any software with the laptop. instead go to the filehippo site and get all sorts of free software.
