Sex a Cockatoo

Can someone tell me how to tell if my Umbrella Cockatoo is a boy or girl? We bought him from what turned out to be a not reputable pet store who lied to us about all kinds of stuff! No matter though,we already love him,he is so sweet. We want to name him boy or girl name. He is said to be 23 weeks. Has dark brown eyes with a baby blue circle around them.

Thanks for any help

June

anything goes

It is hard to tell with young birds. As they get older the iris of the females' eyes will develop a reddish color, the males' eyes will remain black. This is not always completely accurate so other means are necessary if you need to know "for sure" what sex a particular bird is.

Thanks for the info! It's just the pet store at first said it had been dna tested, then after the money was paid ,they said Oh ,No we did not say that! Plus when we took him to the vet they said his wings had been butchered and his toe nails were severly overgrown,so they say it will take several trips with small trims to get the quick to recede and straighten up his poor little wings! He is so sweet! We just wanted to name him a boy or girl name but we will just go uni-sex! Does the blue circle around the eyes have any meaning? It is a pretty powder blue!

Thanks Junehilary
