Seer help!

I am in central Louisiana. Louisiana is known for humidity. I am building a modular home. Roof with R38, R19 walls and R11 floor. First should I put more in the floor? Second, in the home, I will have insulated duct work. I am looking at getting a Luxaire 5 ton "Split System" Air Conditioner. It has a 15 SEER rating, heat pump, variable speed air handler and two speed compressor. I have 2,280 square feet in my home. The split system unit is $5,089 installed. I can get the same in a 14 SEER rating for $3,300 installed. The 14 SEER may not have the variable speed air handler or the two speed compressor. Luxaire is currently offering a $1,500 cash rebate or free 10 year warranty on the 15 SEER product. What would you do? Will I recoup the money on the 15 SEER? I am going to take the 10 year warranty instead of the rebate. Warranty covers everyting for 10 years. Thanks. I hope I got my point across.

Your plans for insulation sound good, but what kind of insulation are you planning on using for the floor- fiberglass? I've heard many times that fiberglass batts tend to trap moisture in the floor in our climate (we live in N.O.) Sprayed foam is the way to go- either urethane or the new "green" soy-based foam.

As to your compressor choices, I'd go with the more efficient 15 SEER unit. The variable speed air handler and two speed compressor will save wear and tear on the system and guard against those irritating "brown-outs" when the compressor kicks on. Efficiency is a great investment. You'll be glad you did when energy prices go sky high again.
