Sea Level

Hi,

I was wondering what "Sea Level" actually meant. I live in Florida. If we are only 12 feet above sea level, does it mean that 12 feet UNDER us is water? Or does it mean that the ocean on the side of the land is only 12 feet lower than the land?

Thank you, all of you smart people :0)

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,
No we are not "floating" over an endless ocean..... you are simply 12 feet relatively above the ocean.  In fact you can be 2,000 miles from any ocean but still be relatively 12 feet above the Ocean surface.  Sea level is just a reference level....  and enable us to compare....  (e.g: a place in Alaska to a place in Sudan).   By the way: The "Dead Sea" in Israel is 492 meters below sea level (lowest point on earth)......   that means that if one digs a tunnel the water from the Medirerenian will fall 492 meters on it's way to the Dead sea....
Best regards,

Sea level is an imaginary line, like the equator.  It means that

if the sea was underneath you, it would be 12 feet below.   People in Denver are a mile above sea level.  Obviously there is no sea nearby to measure from, but if they went straight out horizontally from their house until they were in Florida, they would be a mile in the air over your head.
