Screen or Software Problem? Lenovo Laptop

My girlfriend bought a Lenovo laptop about two months ago. We noticed that sometimes the screen goes blank for about half second every now and then (it can happen twice an hour or not happen all day). I thought it was a hardware problem, probably a faulty connection between the screen and the video card, but yesterday it happened again I saw that the cursor stayed on the screen. So could this be some kind of software problem?

The computer OS is Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have a 2 years old Thinkpad T43 (after Lenovo bought the IBM computers line and before they switched the logo to Lenovo on the Thinkpad series) which exhibit the same behavior.

I did notice that it happens to me only when I'm working unplugged from the electricity and seems to stem from the Lenovo power management software and the built-in software to change the screen resolution.

I have yet to find a solution to the problem, so I just either ignore it or simply try to work hooked up to a power source.

It could be either hardwear or softwear (more likely it's hardwear).  It shouldn't be so.  I have one for some 2-3 years and it never happened.  Since you still have a guarantee better let them check it.  If it happends only while using certain / specific softwears that's a sign that it's a softwear problem (I believe it's a hardwear problem).
