Scientology: a Religion or a Cult?

A religion can be defined as "A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion."

A cult can be defined as "a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols."

So I ask you what is the difference?

What has happened recently is that a 9 minute video of Tom Cruise talking about his Scientology beliefs has been leaked on the internet.

If they feel the need to make recruitment videos...it's a cult my friend.

Neither. It was created by a science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard, who was bipolar and looking for an alternative to psychology. The FDA refused to acknowledge his "e-meter" as having any relevance or medicinal value, and Hubbard decided to make scientology a "church", so that he could continue to use the e-meter and sell books without paying taxes. The "church" continues to spread bipolar disorder through the use of bullying, intimidation, and authoritative hypnosis while charging its members for the services. It's a business. Do some research. It's all true...and thensome.
