Is Scientology a religion or a cult? There seems to be a lot of hype about it lately. Did something happen?

A religion can be defined as "A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion."

A cult can be defined as "a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols."

So I ask you what is the difference?

What has happened recently is that a 9 minute video of Tom Cruise talking about his Scientology beliefs has been leaked on the internet.
