Sc prescription laws

I live in South Carolina.  I recently went to a new physician who wrote me a script for a controlled substance that has been prescribed to me for years.  I did not realize that my old physician had also written a script the last time I visited and that script was left in my sister's car.  Apparently, she went to a drug store, one I use, and submitted the script to be filled.  Low and behold, I had already had the new script filled.  Pharmarcy calls the old doctor and says that I have gotten the same script from another physician.  I will deal with my sister accordingly and I am not in trouble with the law.  Is the pharmacist obligated to call my new physician?  I have never been in trouble before and even though I was not totally responsible, I would say this story is a "crock".  I have waited 3 weeks past the time that a renewal would be do but now am feeling bad withdrawls.  I have not heard from the new doctor but don't want any surprises when I go for my visit.  Please advise.

Sunny, I also live in SC and take a controlled substance and my understanding is that the DEA is involved in monitoring the use of these drugs. If your sister-in-law had your script filled and used it for herself she may have a legal problem so I'd tread lightly here.

Here's my experience, I renew every 30 days but last year I was taking a trip and leaving 7 days befoe the script could be filled. I asked the pharmasist (who I have known for many years) for a 2 day advance in filling the script and he refused because they are so tightly regulated by the DEA. I had to reschedule my trip because I can't be without this drug for more than a day or 2 at most.

I feel your pain but don't blame your pharmasist.

addendum to my last answer that accidentially got clicked away before I could finish it.  However, if the pharmacist called the old doctor the pharmacist was being cautious and covering himself because controlled substance prescriptions are sent to the state and the pharmacist has to answer for them at some point during the year to the state.  They are called triplikets.  One goes to the state.  One goes to the pharmacist and one stays in the doctor's files.  If too many of these prescriptions are filled the state wants to know why.  If you are in withdrawal because you have not filled the presciption at the time you had to then I would say you have a drug problem.  Maybe it's good that this happened.  Maybe you will give up the controlled substance "medicine".

kv, I don't remotely understand your comment below. I have been taking phenobarbitol for many years for a specific purpose. My doctor must renew this periodically and he requires 48 hour notice for renewals. On several occasions I have not been timely and had to wait because the pharmicist would not advance me any of this medication. I believe Ms. sunny is in a similar situation but this does not make us drug addicts, which is the way I'm interperting your comment.

I recently went to a new doctor and noticed he was located in something called the Professional Building. I felt better right away.

Nothing more to add. You have already gotten some very good answers.
