Can We Save Our American Liberty?

A few weeks back, at the dawn of the Obama Administration, I was at dinner with a very bright woman of middle years who called herself an independent. She found the new president very engaging, but she was alarmed by the music in the air: a government takeover of Detroit, a $700 billion government bailout of the banks, a $787 billion stimulus bill, a cap and trade bill that will add perhaps $800-$2,000 to every family's tax bill, a massive healthcare reform now estimated to cost $1 trillion over the next decade. For the past thirty years, most of them good economic years, the federal bite into our GDP has been just under 20%. Calculating the cost of Obama's spending it will be 28.1% this fiscal year, a peacetime record!

My dinner companion was alarmed. She was not simply alarmed by the bills our president and his Democratic colleagues were ringing up on the Hill. My friend, the independent, was alarmed by something much more important, the cost to our freedoms. As I believe she put it, "the question here is our liberty." Increasingly, thoughtful Americans understand the Obama era in these terms. With the government suddenly looming so large in the life of every American, it is time for us to consider what is a singularly American possession, individual liberty. The Founding Fathers created a government that was uniquely solicitous about individual liberty. With the federal government so deeply involved in our healthcare, our banking, our manufacturing, and the many targets of its $787 billion stimulus program, it is time to think about your liberty vis-a-vis the government bureaucrats who are about to minister to you.

Ronald Reagan's modern conservative movement began thinking about the loss of individual liberty to government encroachment half a century ago thanks in part to the wake up call from Friedrich Hayek, delivered in his indispensable book The Road to Serfdom . Hayek believed government was a threat to freedom, enterprise, and the rule of law. Later another vigilant advocate of personal liberty, Frank Meyer, came along and became a major figure for American conservatives, propounding the exhilarating argument that freedom is essential to mankind. Freedom, he wrote, is the "essence of [man's] being," for without it a citizen cannot be moral, by which he meant cannot choose good over evil. Meyer believed freedom was at our essence because God put it there. God gave us freedom to choose, good over evil, art over schlock, a knee replacement over a Botox treatment.

Personal liberty makes each American citizen a creature of dignity. Obama overlooks this. Though in presenting Congress a $3.9 trillion budget on February 24 he insisted that "I'm not" for big government, he is. Consider the vastness of the budget, its far-reaching domestic policies, and much of his background as a community organizer. Clearly he is a big government guy. No other American president has been so committed to big government.

Historically most of our experiences with big government have been unhappy. Big government is expensive, inefficient, and once corrupted very difficult to clean up. Moreover, once a government bureaucracy has made its judgment on you, whom do you appeal to? With Obamacare, government will decide when and if you can get that knee replacement. From the clear utterances of the president's healthcare advisers, namely, Drs. Ezekiel Emanuel and David Blumenthal, that knee replacement will depend on such factors as your age and your overall health. If you are too old or decrepit, government will have a more economical place to spend its money. In other words, your health will not be decided by what you want to pay for it but by government policy. That test you wanted for colon cancer might be denied. You might just be too old. Such decisions are made by the nationalized British system all the time.

Almost any service the government provides can be more efficiently and effectively provided by private enterprise. The most striking example is the inefficiency of the money-losing U.S. Postal Service that has been swept aside by the internet and by such private carriers as UPS and FedEx. Government is not even very effective in its efforts at regulation. Consider the recent failures of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

There is another unappreciated failing of government. It politicizes everything that it touches, including the simplest human relations. Agreements that ought to be arrived at voluntarily or through the rule of law are arrived at by lobbyists or thanks to the political power of your group -- ethnic, economic, or otherwise.

One of the little noted projects of the government healthcare reforms being considered on Capitol Hill today is the channeling of healthcare money away from the elderly and toward community services and drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Equal rights before the law is all well and good, but it is political favor and political power that matter when big government is making your decisions for you.

That is why so many Americans have opted for freedom from government. We recognize that the free society is the most humane…and the most productive.

THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.

Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.

Amazing.   R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr. was out with the SAME woman about the same time.  I think she might be two-timing both of y'all.

It is always amazing to me that the same people that cry foul with our personal freedoms whenever a Democratic president wants to administer some social reform in this country never seem to be there when there is REAL threats to our liberty like when the Bush administration was passing its Patriot Act and making us believe it was all in the name of protecting us.We now have PROOF that his government was spying on Americans citizens without just cause!! And how about Extraordinary Rendition where they can jus take ANY person off the street they deem a threat to national security WITHOUT a trial and send them to God knows where and torture them forever if they wish!! American Citizens!! That is a loss of liberty and due process!! What Obama is doing is trying to fix the economic MESS left by his predecessor!! Your spin can't change the facts of what the last president did and what this one is trying to do!!

There is no reason to believe if done right and the way that Obama wants it to be done which is a PRIVATE insurance company, offered through the government, that every citizen has the RIGHT to buy into if the do not now have insurance ,at a cost that is based on ones ability to pay and taken right out of your salary just like an employer does with your insurance .Your health care is still managed by your DOCTOR!! It is silly to scare people !! This is ABOUT INsurance for people!! We have something like it in Florida already where people who do not have enough money can buy into an insurance policy through the government but it does not cover enough people!! the middle class are left out in the cold!! But it works GREAT!!! NO ONE tells these people where to go to the doctor or who to see and there is NO huge line at the doctor because of this system..If anything it makes things better in ER;s because people go to Doctors instead of ER's!! They get REAL appointments!! and the docs know the will be paid because there is insurance !!Haiwaii has something like it too and they do not have long waits either!!

OK, Moski, I'll bite: Name ONE right or liberty that was taken away from you or anyone else by the Patriot Act? In a war, (which is what this is), our nation must have the ability to destroy the enemy at will and by whatever means necessary! However, unlike any other war in this Nation's history, we are not fighting a "Nation" who has either attacked us or invaded us. No, we're fighting a border less, nation-less enemy that has not only attacked us here at home, but it also has only one objective...to destroy our way of life by whatever means it has at it's disposal!

Neither you or any other Liberal/Democrat has or will convince me that the Patriot Act has hurt American citizens in any way. What it has done is since that horrible day in September, 2001 is P R O T E C T us and has kept the gutless, slime ball, Islamic terrorists from committing any further acts of destruction upon our Homeland!

And just for the record: I don't give a damn whether the C.I.A., N.S.A. F.B.I. or anyother agency that is responsible for this Nation's security, has "spyed" on American citizens!

Well for one I am NOT a liberal Democrat!!! Two I already named liberties that were taken away from people by the Patriot Act,The right to Due process under the law for ALL Americans citizens regardless of what they are charged with But this Extraordinary Rendition allows them to whisk away possible terrorists to foreign soil to be tortured and imprisoned indefinitely .Now you may think this is all well and good as long as it is not YOU that it is happening to or one of YOUR loved ones then you all cry foul!! Amazing how the Right in this country think that the right wing nut jobs have the right to have arsenals of weapons at their disposal even if they threaten harm on this country and its people and its government but any other form of terrorist should be locked up for life in some foreign hole,,,make up your minds!! You defend the government yet put them down for Waco!! Which is it?

Moski, you are RIGHT about care in the Florida, Hawaii, and many other states. That is why 50% of the uninsured in this country could and would be covered by those states insurance plans, 30 of the remaining 50% have the money to have insurance but CHOOSE not to, and 10 - 15% of the remaining, are illegals which we will be taxed to pay for.

So, why not fold those people into the existing plans, instead of forcing the 70% of Americans who are happy with their health care coverage into a government based system? Which THEY will be taxed to pay for!

The one mistake in your answer is that the Obama plan is NOT based on the state plans currently being used, it is based on the British-Canadian Health Care Plan, which is completely different.

And even the state plans have one flaw, the care of illegals and indigents fall on the hospitals. In Massachusetts, Boston Hospital (who supported the Massachusetts Health Plan initially) is suing the state of Massachusetts because the cost of indigent care has put them 38 million in the red, with a forecast of 100 million over the next 6 months!

The numbers for indigent care were severely underestimated, and in the plan the hospital eats the cost. The hospital will probably fail.

There is NO doubt that cost need to be controlled, but that can be done by REGULATING the insurance companies and medical technology companies.

A vascular stent costs $2300, what does it cost to make? Just as an example.

You should meet me in DC on Sept 12 for the Tax March!

This is an extremely complex issue with no easy fix.The President as I have heard him say is open to IDEAS that will WORK!! He is not married to anyone plan just to one simple idea that every American be covered under some form of insurance policy !! I do NOT see this as a bad thing!! I listened to all his speeches on health care and in none of them did he speak of turning our systems into any other system,He is trying rather to gather ideas from all over the country and globe on what works and does NOT work and come up with a plan for our country,I feel there is no reason we cannot make every American who is working pay into a fund to BUY insurance PRIVATE insurance that in then subsidized by the government for those who cannot afford to make the full premiums ...I mean the govern ment now pays for senators and congressmen to get terrific health care on the american dime why can; we find a way to subsidize a PORTION of the insurance for the lower middle class an then bundle then rest so they get a break the way people working in factories and big companies do so they can afford it!!  Base it on income and the  have the gonvernemt not RUN it just subsidize the payment to the private company for AMERICAN citizens only!! if you are an illegal you will have to pay out of pocket!! or go home for care,....tax payors and those who are too poor but american citizens will be taken care of by a private insurance company but like i said just subsidized by the government and they need to stay out of the health industry in every other way except to make sure it is safe they have always done...that is my feelings on it anyways and feel it could and should work if we STOP wasting money on lot of other things like war in countries that have NOTHING to do with us like IRAQ!! BILLIONS a month!! Why is Iraq not paying us for getting rid of its dictator if that is what we really did for them and why are we not getting really cheap gas from these people in payment?? because the whole thing still bothers them and they cannot wait until we are out of there and they are NOT grateful or they would be paying us back and giving us cheap gas!!  So we need to learn our lessons and start taking care of Americans unless there is a CLEAR and present reason like in WW2
