When did sailboats start sailing againt the wind (using aerodynamic sails). Who was/were the first to develop the sails that facilitate this?

Quoting this webpage: "Sailing was revolutionized in the 9th century A.D. by the lateen or triangular sail, probably invented by Arab seamen". Search for this text in the webpage and I think you'll find that paragraph quite informative.
