Personally, I think it is very safe to eat eggs with runny yolks. There was a scare a few years ago where some people were thought to have gotten salmonella from eating under cooked eggs. I think is is possible o get food poisoning this way, but I have been eating eggs this way all off my adult life, and it has never made me sick. I think the problem may come from eggs that are not cleaned properly. I have bought eggs from farms that were partially spotted with chicken sh... uh feces. Eggs do come from a chicken's bottom after all. Simply clean with soap and water. Most eggs from the stores are perfectly safe. Mind you, this is simply my opinion based on thirty years of eating eggs.

Technically, no. An egg that is not pasteurized in the shell does not reach a safe enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria unless the yolk is cooked until it is firm. Not every egg is in infected with salmonella—only a small percentage are—but if you eat that one that is infected and not cooked to a high enough temperature, you will get sick. So you're always taking a risk when doing this. Children, elderly people, and those with a compromised immune systems should never, ever eat an egg that isn't fully cooked (as in raw cookie dough). But if you're healthy, the choice is up to you—just know you're taking a chance!

I love my eggs to have a runny middle to dunk my toast in.  I haven't had any problems when I eat them that way.

As long as the eggshells are well cleaned to prevent contamination from feces, I'd have to say "Yes, it is safe to eat eggs with runny yolks, based on 60 years of experience in eating eggs 'over medium'."

I would say yes. I eat fried eggs with runny yolks often. I have never known there to be a problem with a runny yolk.
