I think the most disputed idea is his belief in repressed memories. He thought that when traumatic events happen, we bury (repress) the memories of them. Usually, the opposite occurs and we can't get them out of our mind. I,ve treated many people with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and although they are often reluctant to talk about their experiences, when they do so ,their memories are perfectly fine. In fact, people with PTSD tend to re-experiene the traumatic event over and over in flashbacks, daydreams, nightmares, etc.

Penis envy is the most ridiculous.  The belief that little girls want to sleep with their daddy and are jealous of their mothers - ridiculous too.  Repressed memories may be disputed but I would have to agree with old Freud on this one.  Sorry, Herb, but I have had repressed memories as a result of trauma to return later.  Of course, not all traumatic events are repressed and I do agree it is more common for them to be remembered.  See, here we are disputing! Perhaps this is the most disputed idea of Freud's afterall.
