SATA motherboard with IDE (using CD ROM cable) as master?

my sata drive doesn't boot, can I replace with ide as master in cd ide slot and cd and slave? In other words, can I unplug the Sata, take another computers ide master and plug it in as the master to the cd slave on the same cable? Or can I just disable the cd rom to see if the ide works, which will help me determine if the sata is really the problem?
