S-Trap Verses P-Trap

I recently installed new plumbing in my house,I used an S-trap for the kitchen sink,but the building inspector told me that I had to install a P-trap in the wall,and that S-traps were no longer acceptable..he would not give me a reason...can anyone think of a good reason not to use an S-trap?...I've left it in and have had no problems with it.....I wonder if he just needed to find a problem?
