Rust colored algae?

i have recently converted my freshwater tank to salt water. it is now in the process of "setting up" i have noticed rust colored spots on the front of the tank. i wipe it off & 2-3 days later they start to come back. is this algae? if so why is it rust colored. this normal?

the salt water are very corosive.

a plastic tank is better to use for it.

Hi Sharon,


It's most probably rust.  Please remember that rust is not one a specific (well defined) material but a family of materials....  rust is usually refered to a combination of Ferrous (iron) oxides and is the product of corrosion (dry or wet corrosion).  Your tank was in neutral (PH = 7) condition or close to it and by changing to salt water you changed the PH to alcaline (high PH).  Many metals will start corroding straight away. The oxides can get many colours.  Tanks for salt water should be made of materials that can withstand it.

It could be algae as well, there are types of red phytoplankton and this is

well documented. It could be the red slime algae, I'm not sure.
