Why is Russia giving weapons to Syria?

Why is Russia supplying Syria with weapons and rockets?  I really just don't understand whose side in the world Russia is on?  Do they want to support world terrorism?  Do they want to destroy all of Israel?  Do they just want power and they think a strong Syria will somehow help them?

To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

First off, you have to realize what goes on in the head of the Syrian leader. If you can do that (because up until now few people have been able to do so), then you will be able to answer your question. Then you have to consider what is going on with the "new" Russia. After you put the two of them together, you will have your answer. Clear as mud.
