Asphalt has a bit of give, but still not much better.  Any hard surface is going to hurt the knees, ankles and muscles.  I love trail running...  Your muscles will always have changing motions because of the turning, twisting, adjusting over rocks and roots.  Anyway, back to question, Asphalt.
