These are roleplaying games created by a new wave of game designers in the "story games" or "indie RPG" movement as found at The Forge (http://indie-rpg.com) and other places on the Internet.
In addition to these games, there is a wealth of game content available in the world based on the d20 system. The d20 system is an outgrowth of Dungeons and Dragons 3.0. Wizards of the Coast, the company that now owns Dungeons and Dragons, has licensed the bare bones of their game system as a Open Gaming License. This means other companies can create and publish game content that is directly compatible with their game. As a result, a thousand wonderful game content flowers have blossomed. Just search "d20" on Google and see the wealth of content.
Better yet, visit your Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS). Although this link:

is about Board Games, wherever you find these kind of board games, so too will you find lovely game books, so you can utilize this wonderful list of stores (and the other lists referenced therein) to find FLGS everywhere.
Of course, most stores that advertise themselves as a comics / anime / games / Magic the Gathering hobbyist place will have books. It's best to call ahead and be sure, though.
If you are a non-gamer who is interested in perhaps getting involved with roleplaying games, I suggest you try my podcast, the Square One Podcast at http://squareonepodcast.com. The first episode will be out soon. This podcast is designed to help newbie gamers get into the hobby.
Finally, there are a number of gaming podcasts on the internet hosted by the Goblin Broadcast Network at http://gbncom.com
Remember you don't need an iPod to listen to gaming podcasts: most people just listen through their computers directly, or download the files and burn them to a CD for later enjoyment. And there are extremely cheap alternatives to iPods if you want a portable mp3 file player. So there's no reason to not enjoy this wealth of free content that is available to you.
I hope this helps you a little better.
