Role-playing games

I recalled today that about 15 years ago the one and only role-playing game was D&D.

Then I begun wondering what's going today in the role-playing field ?

I've never played these games myself, but I have a friend who does and she's currently playing a game that's based in the gambling scene of Las Vegas in the early 1970s or something like that. So I guess things changed, at least a little bit

Rejected slogan #235:

Yedda - a brain the size of a planet.

Well, as far as I know, D&D (now in it's 3rd edition), still rules the scene. There are several other variants covering other genres, such as

CyberPunk 2020 from R. Talsorian for Sci Fi, Marvel Super Heroes for Comics, and others.

If you are still interested in this topic, check out the website "Indie Press Revolution"

http://www.indiepressrevolution.com/

These are roleplaying games created by a new wave of game designers in the "story games" or "indie RPG" movement as found at The Forge (http://indie-rpg.com) and other places on the Internet.

In addition to these games, there is a wealth of game content available in the world based on the d20 system. The d20 system is an outgrowth of Dungeons and Dragons 3.0. Wizards of the Coast, the company that now owns Dungeons and Dragons, has licensed the bare bones of their game system as a Open Gaming License. This means other companies can create and publish game content that is directly compatible with their game. As a result, a thousand wonderful game content flowers have blossomed. Just search "d20" on Google and see the wealth of content.

Better yet, visit your Friendly Local Gaming Store (FLGS). Although this link:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/11788

is about Board Games, wherever you find these kind of board games, so too will you find lovely game books, so you can utilize this wonderful list of stores (and the other lists referenced therein) to find FLGS everywhere.

Of course, most stores that advertise themselves as a comics / anime / games / Magic the Gathering hobbyist place will have books. It's best to call ahead and be sure, though.

If you are a non-gamer who is interested in perhaps getting involved with roleplaying games, I suggest you try my podcast, the Square One Podcast at http://squareonepodcast.com. The first episode will be out soon. This podcast is designed to help newbie gamers get into the hobby.

Finally, there are a number of gaming podcasts on the internet hosted by the Goblin Broadcast Network at http://gbncom.com

Remember you don't need an iPod to listen to gaming podcasts: most people just listen through their computers directly, or download the files and burn them to a CD for later enjoyment. And there are extremely cheap alternatives to iPods if you want a portable mp3 file player. So there's no reason to not enjoy this wealth of free content that is available to you.

I hope this helps you a little better.

You now have two major publishers on the dice and paper RPG scene they would be

Wizards of the Coast who publishes Dungeons and Dragons currently they are on edition 3.5 though the release of fourth addition is eminent, you then have White Wolf which publishes both Exalted, a fantasy based game, and then  World of Darkness or  WoD which is a modern day setting focused around werewolves, vampires and mages. White Wolf is on the second edition of both their games, and unlike many of the dice and paper games out there white wolf does not use a d20 system but a d10 system were results are based on a cumulative number of successes rolled on a number of dice. There are then many other less mainstream games including World of Warcraft, all of the d20 supplement books and even a Serenity RPG based on Joss Wheodon's Firefly. Many gamers feel that it was White Wolf that brought girls into gaming so that today gamer girls are not quite the rare jewel they are imagined to be. My introduction however was through DMing D&D 3.0.
