I think it's best to leave them on the vine until ripe

I want to believe

Kiss Usually one would pick them just before eating, but if you are having problems with invasive species, side-splitting or what-ever, pick them & let them continue to ripen on your window sill, they'll be as good, GOD, I LOVE fresh tomatoes!!!

You can leave them on the vine till they ripen but sometimes the birds will eat red tomatoes off the vine. If you don't use a lot of poison(like sevin dust), the insects will eat holes in them. I always find it best to pull them when they just show they're changing colors. Put them in a window sill or on the picnic table outside(you will need to cover them with wire mesh or like,to keep birds off of them) Hope this helps

Hi Wilba47,

I agree with the answers of the rest of my co-experts. it's nice to eat fresh tomatoes rigth from the garden. But the problem is that, if you'll let the fruits stay on the vines to ripen themselves, some invaders might be attracted to the ripe fruits causing them to be eaten or destroyed.

To be safe, harvest them when they are dark green in color, they're already matured enough for safe keeping let them ripen at home in a safer place.

Happy gardening.
