Right Age for First Credit Card

What is the earliest age you would recommend your kid to have a credit card? Would you stipulate that she has a steady job or a steady source of income (other than her parent, that is) first?

I wouldnt recommened givving your kids a credit card from ages 16 and below.  You need to start them off slow, at ages 6-8 start giving them a minimal allowance of about 3 or 4 dollars, and teach them to save money and encourage making money on a way of their own (lemonade stand, car wash etc.) to teach them the value of money.  AT ages 9-12 raise the allowance by about 2 or 3 dollars.  At ages 13-16 make sure you closely monitor their money total, Teens tend to be money spending monsters.  Also at age 16 encourage your kid to get a job, a simple job such as a cashier.  Then at age 17 you may allow your kid to get a pre paid credit card.  Once your kid has a steady job with enough money allow them to get ther own credit card.

I don't want any child of mine to have a credit card until he/she also has a steady, paying job to allow him/her to pay the bill.  It seems to me that about 40 years old would be a good age.  Credit cards are just too seductive to young people who want everything that their parents have (which took them decades to acquire), but they want it all NOW.

I believe at 14 years old. give them a part time job allow them a small limit of $200.00 and let them use 51% of the credit line available say $102.00 and let them make above the monthly payment of about 5 dollars until it is paid off and then let them see what it does to the credit report. It is simple math. Lots of adults go into this world today without the knowledge of balancing a check book let alone credit scores (that are extremly simple). treat your child like a choild and a child is what you will have. treat them with respect and allow the to be responsible and see what happens. let them watch their credit report online so they can see what a company is talking about when they mention identity theft.

Well, I'm 14 and I don't have a credit card. And to be honest, I don't want one. Cash is much easier and faster. I do know people my age who do , though. But I would say that I would want a prepaid one first, just because an actual credit or debit card is a huge responsibility. I agree with the other people saying that there should be a limit for spending.
