Director's hunting license revoked

Most of it. The man responsible for keeping hunters in line -- is stripped of his hunting privileges for awhile. Today the game commission voted to revoke game and fish director bruce thompson's hunting license -- because he illegally shot a deer .. Jeremy jojola has been following the story from the beginning....And has more on the embarassing decision handed down to thompson. Jeremy. He's the boss of the state agency that regulates hunting in new mexico.. And now he's not even allowed to hunt himself. Game and fish director bruce thompson, seen here at an earlier hearing last month, just had his hunting privileges revoked for two years. This happening today in almagordo during a game commission meeting. The seven members of the commission voted unanimously several hours ago. You'll remember thompson was convicted of illegally shooting a deer on private property in southern new mexico last november. He has already served his probation, and paid some court fines. Thompson reportedly didn't say much during today's hearing. Thompson has always claimed he wasn't poaching -- that he simply mis-read his gps device and wandered onto private land.

Banding Possible Thanks to Students

duck hunting season is fast approaching...and for biologists, that means it's time to get ready to track the feathered flyers. To do that, they catch, and band the ducks...but not without some help. Perry Olson shows us what was happening this week at the J. Clark Salyer Wildlife Refuge... We want all those ducks pushed up against the water...don't let them run up to the side... Gary Erickson needs some help with this task of trapping the Mallards and Pin Tails... Just go ahead and work them. Otherwise they get and start coming back on us...then they get out! We want them toward the water. While some of the ducks do manage to escape...others...are in for a little science and they got it this morning, thanks to high schoolers from Northwood and Hatton...who had their hands full! (Eric Dafforn - Hatton Senior) Some are cooperating and some are not! Got lots of ducks and the kids are jumping to it. Many are doing this for the first time. What they are doing is trapping and delivering the two breeds of ducks to biologists who are banding them...but why...Gary explained much earlier in the morning...when the process began. (Gary) Band returns will tell us what impact hunting has. We can see what affect it has on young birds. We know they are just, well, stupid! They haven't been around the block so to speak! Not just young ducks, but females too...and there are plenty of them here this morning... Big morning...then with all of these pintails it is going to take awhile! Smaller birds take up less space so we get more of them! It can be a bit of an overwhelming process fo the mallards and pintails... The main thing is we need minimal amount of stress possible. The longer it takes the more stressful it is. With the rain last night they are damp and the longer they stay damp, that is not good for them. Why is that? The ducks can get hypothermia...but they don't because of the care the professionals...and the students take...and those students are very much appreciated! We couldn't do this otherwise. We would need 15 people and we don't have that on the station so if we don't have help we would not be able to do this operation. Their teacher knows the students get plenty out of it too... They see role models in the men and women working here. They see that biology is not just in a book, there is lots of field biology to be done and it is lots of fun stuff! Perry Olson, KX News. The group from Northwood and Hatton was glad to be back this year after missing the process last year because of the devastating Tornado that ripped through their area.

FLW Update

Tommy Skarlis had high hopes coming into the Wal-Mart FLW Championship, but then again, so did the other 53 pro-anglers. But only one could win the title and 150-thousand dollars and the man that did was Skarlis You need to go open up a checking account because we just busted 150 clams! says Tommy Skarlis. That was his wife on the other line, shortly after the tournament wrapped up. The weigh-in was at the Bismarck Civic Center, and that's where Skarlis was crowned champion after netting a second round total of 10 fish for 29.44 pounds. I have wanted to win a cup or major title like this so bad in both the PWT or FLW and now, I've seized it and most especially, with all my friends that I've made - some of the greatest people in the world live in this community. he says. Skarlis is a native of Walker, Minnesota and he was the only angler to lead on more than one day, including the most important.
