According to an article I read on

Time online, Branson is a family man himself, and he's very conscious of the fact that there are other family members who are affected by Madeline's disappearance. He wanted to do a small thing to relieve some of the burden from the family, as legal fees have accummulated due to speculation that the parents are involved. (He obviously believes they are innocent of any wrongdoing.) I think he's trying to alleviate the burden of their worries about defending themselves so they can focus whole-heartedly on making it known that Madeline is still missing and they want her home.
